Swim Marathon Nikiti, Halkidiki – Saturday July 13, 2013
The Toroneos Gulf Swim Marathon is probably Halkidiki’s most important yearly event. The 43rd annual swimming competition will take place on Saturday July 13.
Starting in Kallithea on the Kassandra peninsula, the contestants will swim across the Toroneos Gulf, a distance of 26 kilometres, and finish in Nikiti on the Sithonia peninsula. The fastest recorded swim time, in its 42 year history, was in 1997 when J. Benner swam the distance in 5 hours and 14 minutes.
Normally the contestants come from all over Greece but this year there will be participants from several countries in Europe such as Hungary, Belgium and Great Britain. One swimmer that will compete comes from as far away as Argentina.
Be in Nikiti on Saturday afternoon to meet the winners and join in the 2 day celebration that will take place in Nikiti! Check our Nikiti hotel and apartment recommendations if you plan to be in Halkidiki for the weekend and enjoy the hospitality at some of Sithonia’s best restaurants.
