In Halkidiki, Greece camping is a favourite pastime. The Sithonia peninsula, with it’s beautiful mountainous surroundings and beaches, is the big magnet. This is why the largest number of campsites are on this peninsula – about 30.
So we set out to find the 5 best camping and caravanning sites to help you know how to decide when you are looking to rough it in Sithonia.
But how do you rate a campsite? Reviews are not always objective. An employee has a bad day, gives you bad service and that means a bad review for what is otherwise a wonderful campsite. Some people like excitement and not solitude, others want restaurants and not having to cook over a camp stove.
Because tastes and needs vary, we cannot write which campsite is the best but we will give – in our opinion – which are the top 5 campsites of Sithonia and for what reason we feel that way. So here we go…
Best 5 Campsites of Sithonia – 2013
Camping Areti – Top beach for solitude
Located just south of Neos Marmaras in an area of Sithonia that is very undeveloped, camping Areti is what a campsite should be. At the end of a dirt road, this camping location is the utmost in isolation and quietude, even though it’s only a 9 km drive to busy Neos Marmaras. Camping Areti has 2 beaches which are delightful for swimming.
Thalatta Village Camp Kalamitsi – Best beach for comforts
Whereas Camping Areti has the isolation close to Neos Marmaras, Thalatta Village has brought the village to an isolated part of Sithonia. Kalamitsi is a barren, but spectacular part of Sithonia. Thalatta Village is what the name indicates, a real camp village with everything needed, so you can stay here and just enjoy! The beach is great, water sports are plentiful, there is a swimming pool and lots to keep the kids happy, even a Gelateria. Even with all this, there is no compromise on the camping experience.
Armenistis – Best for young people and families
This ‘Blue Flag’ beach is one of Sithonia’s best. A pure white sand cove with a spectacular view to Mount Athos. Armenistis is organized to keep you entertained. But a word of caution to those seeking quiet and solitude – you will not find it here. The list of activities is endless – sporting tournaments, concerts, outdoor cinema, beach volleyball etc…
Akti Oneirou – Coolest camping beach
Can there be a such thing as ‘camping with the stars’? Certainly! Akti Oneirou shows us how. This campsite will make you feel like you are hobnobbing with the well-to-do. It has probably one of the most popular beach bars in Halkidiki and a restaurant that brings class to the beach. A couple of nice extra touches are the Steakhouse and Thai massage. Definitely the coolest camping beach in Halkidiki.
Camping Paradisos Kriaritsi – No frills
Camping Paradisos on Kriaritsi beach (see photo above) is a bare bones basic campsite. But what makes it a winner is the location. Imagine walking out the door of your caravan across 20 m of sand beach and taking a plunge in refreshingly cool waters. Kriaritsi is one of Sithonia’s best beaches for its sand and clear water and people don’t know about it.
