Enjoy the amazing view of Mount Athos from the wide, long beach in Sarti .
Sarti has grown into quite the resort town that stretches the length of its long Blue Flag beach. From the beach you can have an amazing view of Mount Athos, which dramatically comes out of the gulf looking much like a volcano with it’s towering peak often catching a halo of clouds. Sarti is a good place to use as a base for your travels in Sithonia. The boardwalk is lined with plenty of good seafood restaurants that offer you a front row seat to the beach and the inspiring view of Mount Athos.
Sarti is very well developed to accommodate tourists. There are some new, smaller luxury hotels that have popped up in Sarti in the last years, but generally the town is equipped with apartments, rooms and studios. The great thing with all the hotels and apartments is that they are all spread out along the beach, so wherever you stay, you are still in close walking distance to the beach.
Because people reside in Sarti, it has plenty to offer in the way of supermarkets, corner stores and bakeries. Most apartments have kitchenettes so you can do your own cooking and enjoy a budget vacation.
Mentioned by Herodotus, ancient Sarte was located in this area and was a member of the Athenian Alliance. After this there isn’t really any mention of Sarti. It eventually became territory belonging to the Athos monasteries. Around 1925, during the great population exchanges between Turkey and Greece, the inhabitants of the small island of Afisia in the Sea of Marmara were forced to leave their home and resettled here in Sarti.
What to do in Sarti
The town can keep you entertained with it’s many restaurants and a small shopping quarter with small boutique shops for clothing, jewelry, and other souvenirs. There are also many small gyros shops where you can get a bite for lunch at a reasonable price.
Not far from Sarti are the popular beaches of Portokali (or Orange beach), it makes a good day trip. If you have a car it’s easy to get to, just a 10 minutes drive north of Sarti. Otherwise you can take one of the boat tours to Orange beach, booked through a local travel agency. Tour operators can also provide you with boat excursions to Mount Athos and to other popular destinations in Macedonia such as Meteora.
Armenistis beach is also close by as are the many beaches by Sykia to the south of Sarti. If you are up for adventure then check out the scuba diving centres in the Sarti area.
From here you can also easily take a hike to the top of Mount Dragoudeli, the highest point in Sithonia at 811 meters. At the summit you will enjoy you an amazing view of Mount Athos and Olympus.
