Mountain biking and cycling in All Sithonia Halkidiki
Mountain biking and cycling is a growing sport in Halkidiki. The potential in Sithonia is especially great because of the mountainous terrain that is not enjoyed by Kassandra. With a temperate climate all year round, this is a perfect destination for active travellers and of course cyclists. And while you stay fit, you get to see some splendid scenery.
Where are the best trails?
The bike tours in Sithonia, are some of the more difficult ones, but also some of the most rewarding as you can enjoy a landscape that is wild and beautiful with spectacular views. They were designed to be the distance that a fit cyclist could travel in a day. If you are not a fit cyclist, then it’s recommended that you shorten the route.read more...
We can be very appreciative to the Halkidiki Hotel Association, who in 2006 published a cycling guide for Halkidiki that gives detailed maps and explanations of 17 cycling tours that can be enjoyed in this region. Six of them are on Kassandra, two in northern Halkidiki, two on the neck of the Athos peninsula, and seven in Sithonia, which we are listing here. One of the tours is an easy one, four are moderate, and two are difficult with a lot of climbing.
What should I bring?
Mountain bikes are the best choice. If you can’t bring your own, there are plenty of places that rent out. Besides proper clothing and cycling equipment, you will probably need water and food. Supermarkets are in abundance so you can stock up.
Anything else I need to know?
The mountains in this area are nature reserves so you are expected to protect the surroundings. Cyclists should stick to the roads and trails and not ride cross-country.
You are also in bee country. This is one of Greece’s prime honey producing areas. When riding past the beehives, do so at a snail’s pace so as not to disturb them. You don’t want to get stung.
